EyeforTransport

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas handled record volumes in the 1st quarter of 2004. Throughput rose by more than 27% to 957,500 TEU ( Q1 2003 : 749231 TEU ).

The first quarter of 2004 also saw the highest number of vessel calls since the port began operating. A total of 791 vessel calls were recorded, an annual increase of 7.7%. The increase in volumes is attributed to an increase in the number of services at PTP, and free & local cargo growth.

In February, a new berth production record of 302 moves per hour was set during operations on the vessel Skagen Maersk, during which 4,613 moves were completed in less than 16 hours.

The past quarter saw the official launch of JB Cocoa’s factory in the PTP industrial free zone. The construction of BMW’s Asian spare parts distributions centre on schedule, and is due for completion by June 2004. In line with Container Security Initiative requirements, PTP’s container scanning facilities are fully operational.

PTP CEO Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said : “This first quarter was a very good start to the year indeed. These latest figures have shown that PTP continues to register robust growth despite increasingly competitive market conditions.”
