The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has taken delivery of two of the largest quay cranes in Southeast Asia.
The growing Singapore rival has ordered five of the super post panamax quayside cranes along with 15 more rubber tyred gantry cranes from Italian supplier Noell the remainder due for delivery in 2002.
With a 60m outreach, the new quay cranes have the capacity to handle 22 boxes across a container vessel. They also board a twin-lift spreader with a loading capacity of 61 tonnes, and a chassis alignment system to speed up container loading and discharge.
“The system also has a scanner that can tell the delivery truck the location and time to stop, resulting in shorter turnaround time,” a statement said.
Commenting on the productivity boosts the cranes would deliver, PTP Chief Executive Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said the cranes were the largest in the South-East Asian region, making the port one of only a handful in the world to operate them.
“The cranes therefore put PTP in a leading position and will enable us to serve our customers with even higher efficiency levels,” he said.
“With this delivery and commissioning, PTP will soon have 16 quay cranes operational” giving the port an annual container handling capacity of 4.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) by the end of 2002.
