PTP takes delivery of final 2 cranes

Business Times (M)

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), South-East Asia’s fastest growing transhipment hub, has taken cranes for Phase 1, with the arrival of two units of Super Post Panamax quayside cranes from MMC-ZPMC of China yesterday morning.

PTP now has 24 units of Super Post Panamax quayside cranes for its Phase 1, increasing the port’s capacity to 4.5 – 5 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) annually.

The cranes were delivered by an all-type bulk vessel, Zheng Hua 3, 234m long, PTP said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

These two cranes, similar to the other three ZPMC cranes have an outreach of 60m and the capacity to handle 22 boxes across a container vessel, it said.

Apart from being equipped with twin-lift spreader, capable of handling two 20-foot containers at one time, these cranes are equipped with an articulated gantry system, enabling the crane to negotiate curves of better manoeuvring between PTP Phase 1 and Phase 2.

Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman, chief executive officer of PTP said: “The delivery Is timely given the increasing volumes handled at PTP. The cranes are also the largest in South-East Asia and prepares PTP for the next generation of container vessels.”

MMC-ZPMC is a joint-venture company between MMC Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd (MMCEC) and Shanghai-Zhenhua Port Machinery Company Ltd (ZPMC).

PTP signed an agreement for MMC-ZPMC to supply five units of the quaycranes on
December 3 2001.

PTP is tagged as the fastest growing port in South-East Asia having handled 2.05 million TEUs in year 2001, its second year of operations.

Phase 1 of PTP includes 2.16km of linear wharf consisting of six berths of 360m each, a 110,000 TEUs container yard, which is one of the largest container storage facilities in the region and 22 Super Post Panamax quaycranes.
