PTP to bring second phase forward

Fairplay Weekly

Malaysia's Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) will bring forward the start date of its second phase to as early as end 2001 on the strength of Maersk Sealand's arrival and expressions of interest by other main line operators, a spokesman has confirmed.

"We will be beginning the development earlier. It has been fast-tracked because of demand," he said. The second phase will see the addition of three to six berths with a minimum extra annual throughput of two million TEUs. The port officially opened on March 13 with the aim of starting its second stage of development within five years. PTP is due to complete its first phase, with 6 berths with a 3.8 million TEUs handling capacity, by the end of this year.
