PTP To Participate In US Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has started discussions with representatives from the US Embassy and US Customs here with the view of participating in the Customs-Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C-TPAT).

The C-TPAT was launched by US Customs in April this year to ensure all cargoes to US are effectively scrutinised and documented.

PTP chief executive officer, Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman, said PTP's participation in the programme, which is a joint government business initiative to strengthen overall supply chain and border security, was also aimed at providing its customers security and comfort in shipping goods to the US and other markets.

The programme recognises that customs can provide the highest-level security only through close cooperation with the ultimate owners of the supply chain.

"Our participation will also enable PTP to be utilised as a hub for goods from other ports which do not have similar facilities," he added.

He said PTP was actively in discussions with the US parties to participate in the programme encompassing security procedures, physical security, personal security, education and training and access controls.

Besides C-TPAT, PTP has also encouraged the Malaysian Government to fast track participation in the US Container Security Initiative (CSI), a programme also launched by the US Customs in January this year, Mohd Sidik said
