PTP to purchase massive quay cranes, gantries

Asian Shipper

The Malaysian Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has signed an agreement with Noell Crane Systems Gmbh Italy for the supply of five super post-panamax quayside cranes and 15 rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes for its operations.

The official signing ceremony, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Johor Bahru was attended by officials from Noell and PTP.

PTP Chairman Dato’ Mohd Taufik Abdullah signed the agreement on behalf of PTP while Noell was represented by David Bertozzi, Noell Fantuzzi Regianne Group Chief Executive Officer. Wong Chut Kun, Senior General Manager for PTP’s Technical Division, and Bernd Vossnacke, Executive Director for sales and marketing for Noell, witnessed the signing.

PTP claims that the five units of super post-panamax quayside cranes from Noell are the largest quay cranes ever installed in Southeast Asia. They have an outreach of 60 metres and the capacity to handle 22 boxes across a container vessel. The quay cranes will also be equipped with twin-lift spreaders, capable of handling two 20-foot containers at one time.

The RTGs will have a capacity of one over five high, with a width of seven containers across. Both the quay cranes and RTG will be delivered to PTP in fully erected form.

The quay cranes will be fabricated in Sicily in Italy, while the RTGs will be fabricated in Xiamen in China. The first two units of quay cranes and five units of RTGs will arrive at PTP by the end of January 2002, with the rest of the quay cranes and RTGs to be delivered by the end of the first quarter of 2002.

Mr. Dato’ Taufik said; “The purchase of these five quay cranes with a 22-row across span has put us among the few ports in the world that already have these cranes. We have made this purchase essentially because PTP’s fast growth has resulted in it receiving almost daily the largest container vessels in the world.

“These vessels are now getting larger and there are few ports in the world that have already responded to ensure that their equipment can cater to these vessels. PTP is now part of this early group of port. Our current and future potential customers will definitely be well catered for.”
