JOHOR BAHARU: Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) plans to expand its capacity next year through its phase 3A development project costing about RM5 billion.

Johor Port Authority (LPJ) general manager Muhammad Razif Ahmad said the development would increase PTP’s capacity from 10.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) currently to 15 million TEUs when completed in 2019.

“The PTP expansion is always being discussed between LPJ and the PTP management in efforts to increase its operation which now enters the 15th year.

“PTP is now operating under Phase two and has 14 wharves totalling five kilometres (km),” he said.

Muhammad Razif said this to reporters at the launch of LPJ Port Week 2015, officiated by LPJ chairman Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli here yesterday.

He said through the phase 3A development, a total of three wharves measuring 1.5 km would be built, of which one was targeted to be operational by end-2018.

He said LPJ had various plans for PTP until 2045 and the port has ample space for capacity expansion.

“This is a challenge for us (LPJ) and PTP and we will strive for this. At present, besides the Maersk Line ships, the world’s biggest container ship, MSC Oscar with a capacity of 19,000 TEUs has docked at PTP,” he said.

On Port Week 2015, Muhammad Razif said it started last Saturday until next Thursday and featured programmes such as Treasure Hunt and Meet Customers Day  held at Galleria@Kotaraya here as the curtain raiser.

The annual event organised by LPJ with the cooperation of Johor Port Bhd and PTP aims to introduce and promote ports in the state and highlight their services to port users.

Other events include exhibition by agencies under the Transport Ministry such as the Road Transport Department and Department of Civil Aviation, innovation exhibition by the Malaysian Association of Creativity and Innovation as well as Green Port Conference 2015.
