RM1.26m trailers for PTP Distribution Park

Shipping Times

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), South-East Asia's fastest growing transhipment hub, has received delivery of several units of trailers catering exclusively to the operations of warehouses within the PTP Distribution Park area.

The eight units of "cornerless" trailers (prime mover and chassis) from Tractors Malaysia Sdn Bhd are the first batch of the 25 units of trailers originally scheduled to be delivered by mid June 2001.

The trailers were bought at a total cost of RM1.26 million, PTP said in a statement. The trailers will be used specifically to cater to the movement between the terminal and the Distripark area.

"Cornerless" trailers do not have any corners on the chassis, thus enabling faster installation of twistlock" on the containers. The cornerless trailers are part of the port's overall strategy towards further improving its productivity and the setting of new regional standards in port productivity.

Prior to the delivery of the new batch, PTP had six prime movers and 27 chassis providing means of transport for the warehouses within the Distripark area.

PTP chief executive officer Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman in receiving these new trailers said: "These trailers are important to our overall strategy to set new regional benchmarks of port productivity.

They are also our commitment to PTP tenants within the Distripark area. "Current tenants within the Distripark area include Pelepas Logistics, Kenwood Logistics, Tiong Nam and Malaysian Industrial Estates.

Mohd Sidik added: "These companies will be able to enjoy the advantage of faster turnaround time and overall improvement in their own service levels.

We are also confident that this will lead to PTP attracting more third party logistics and warehouse operators to establish their base in the vast hinterland areas within the port.

PTP is strategically located at the southwest shoulder of Johor with a minimum diversion time from the confluence of the main international shipping lanes.

PTP's strategic location presents significant geographical advantages through its deep waters, sheltered bay and wide access channel.

With these features, PTP is able to ensure immediate berthing for vessels thus reducing waiting time significantly.

Current facilities at PTP include 6 berths of 360 metres each in length backed by one of the largest container yards in the region which has a storage capacity of 110,000 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units), 14 super postpanamax quay cranes catering to the world's largest container vessels and a full complement of rubber-tyred gantry cranes, prime movers and trailers.
