Port Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) will begin scheduled rail services at the end of this month CEO Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman told ci-online.
The rail service will operate three times a day in each direction can carry about 50 TEU per trip, totalling 300 TEU a day.
The 31km link, officially opened by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in January this year, will connect the port to the national rail network. Mohd Sidik said that the link will extend the port’s hinterland to as far away as Thailand as it offered a faster way of transporting cargo.
He said: ‘From here to Southern Thailand, the rail link offers a transit time of just 72 hours. So it’s faster by rail than by sea.’
