Meanwhile, Tanjung Pelepas, a rival Malaysian box port of Singapore, concluded its affairs on a positive note in 2009 by attracting additional volumes from new customers such as CMA CGM. In the first 10 months of this year it saw a growth figure of 8.7% to 5.4 million TEU.

A spokesperson for Tanjung Pelepas said: 'US and European economies are beginning to see a dip and the current downtrend in global container traffic will continue until the year-end. But we are confident that Tanjung Pelepas will record a 6.5 million TEU throughput this year - representing 8% growth from the 6 million TEU handled in 2009.
