Star Cruises, PTP to turn port into cruise hub
New Straits Times
Star Cruises, the first global cruise line, and Port of Tanjung Pelepas are looking into possibilities of developing PTP as a cruise hub in Southeast Asia.
Star Cruises is confident that PTP's strategic location, which is backed by excellent road linkages to Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia would ensure that it serves as an effective cruise hub.
Star Cruises' MegaStar Taurus, with a passenger capacity of 90, made its maiden call at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) yesterday.
In a joint statement with Star Cruises today, PTP said MegaStar Taurus became the first cruise vessel to call at the port that is geared to be the premier transhipment hub in Southeast Asia.
MegaStar Taurus' maiden call at PTP is seen as an initial step towards establishment of future cruise operations at PTP, the statement said.
With deep waters of 15 metres at the access channel and wharf area, turning basin of 600 metres and a sheltered bay, PTP would be able to serve the largest of both cruise and container vessels Friday.
PTP's long term plans in this area include establishing the port area as a maritime centre, serving all needs and requirements for the regional port and shipping sector.
Meanwhile, following the acquisition of NCL Holdings, Star Cruises now has a fleet of 20 ships and over 21,000 lower berths.
