MALAYSIA’S Port of Tanjung Pelepas reached a landmark last year with throughput of 2.05m teu.

The port in Johor neighbouring Singapore is just over two years old and volumes increased nearly fivefold from 418,000 teu a year earlier.

“The 2.05m teu are a reflection of PTP’s resilience in facing the present economic outlook,” said Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman, chief executive officer of PTP.

Virtually all of PTP’s volumes come from 30% shareholder Maersk Sealand and feeder services.

The port will continue to expand its capacity next year. “Capacity at PTP is being increased and the 10 quay cranes ordered will boost capacity to around 4.5m-5m teu a year,” he said.

“To take advantage of this PTP is now actively pursuing new customers both from shipping and in the free zone area.”

Tanjung Pelepas is reported to have signed a memorandum of understanding with Taiwanese giant Evergreen to shift its 1.2m teu of business in Singapore to the Malaysian port from August this year.
