Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Malaysia’s biggest single port operator and a subsidiary owned by MMC Corp Bhd has strengthened its position as the busiest container  port in Malaysia after hitting an all - time high of 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in August.

The latest record firmly places PTP on the road to achieve target total container throughput  of 9.2 million TEUs for 2015. PTP container volume for the first eight months this year has registered a growth of 8.9% compared to the same period last year.

“Positive improvements on productivity in container operations and better optimisation of resources were seen as the main reason behind this latest breakthrough. “With the strong support from PTP’s existing customers as well as volume from new customers, we are confident that PTP is on track to continue significant growth,” said Chief executive Officer Glen Hilton.

Last year, PTP handled 8.5 million TEUs container throughput and simultaneously became the first port in Malaysia to achieve such a feat. PTP was also one of the only three ports in the world that recorded a double digit growth and placed 18th in the world’s top ranking ports for 2014.

PTP completed phase two of its master plan through a recent expansion involving building two new berths, three blocks of container yards, procurement of new quay cranes as well as electrifying existing rubber- tyred gantries.

The expansion provides PTP with an additional 720 metres of quay length and subsequently raises its annual handling  capacity by 25% to 10.5 million TEUs.
