The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has successfully passed another milestone when it became the first Malaysian terminal to hit the 8 million TEU in a year
The breakthrough was made early this month and the port believes it will hit 8.6M TEU by end of this year. Commenting on this achievement, Glen Hilton, CEO, said; "Passing this latest milestone further underlines our position as the leading container terminal in Malaysia. We certainly could not have done this without the commitment and the dedication of our staff to provide our customers with fast and efficient service over the years. We are also thankful to the government and local authorities, customers and all of our stakeholders for their continuous support towards us."
Hilton added that PTP has seen steady growth since the port started its operation 15 years ago. The port has grown tremendously from just 400,000 TEU handled in year 2000. It is confident that it can continue to record robust growth in the future.
"The completion of our berth 13 and 14 in the second quarter of this year complete with new advanced equipment has increased PTP’s capacity to 12.5M TEU a year," said Hilton. "We are expecting the container market to grow primarily on the back of global shipping access, hence utilising our port capacity. Hitting the 9M TEU mark is our target for 2015 and it will certainly create another great milestone for PTP.
"We are confident that with strong organic growth from PTP’s existing customers as well as volume from new customers, we will increase our container volume over the next three to five years. The port will continue to be the catalyst for economic and social benefits in Johor state and the Iskandar Malaysia region."
