Tanjung Pelepas port raises competition
Asian Shipper
SINGAPORE'S PSA Corp, now the busiest container port in the world, could face competition from the nearby Tanjung Pelepas container port in Johor, Malaysia, which is to begin operation in January next year, and is reported to be offering dedicated berths carriers.
The port is expected to reach a capacity of 3.8 million TEU a year after opening. However, PSA hopes to continue its policy of meeting its customers' needs by offering more efficient connections, thus following carriers to expand business in the region.
Other ports in the region, such as Thailand and Indonesia, have also developed berth infrastructure, allowing for more competition.
For now, SIngapore's PSA will retain its title as the world's busiest port, with 15.13 million TEU handled in 1998. It is also going to invest $7 billion in development of the Pasir Panjang Terminal, giving it a capacity of 26 berths and over 18 million TEU per year.
