JOHOR BAHRU: The port of Tanjung Pelepas is going through final trial runs in preparation for its lunching next year. It has received 34 vessels since Oct 10 as part of this exercise.

Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP) said yesterday this represented “a great start for a Greenfield port which is envisioned to be Malaysia’s transshipment hub for Southeast Asia”.

On Wednesday US representatives from New York, Los Angeles, Mississippi and Virginia visited PTP.
They were briefed by its executive director, Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman, and later toured the ports’ first two berths, its quay crane operations, the container yard and its distripark.

Mohd Sidik said such visits help provide valuable feedback for PTP as it undergoes trial operations.
PTP’s Phase One development programme which is scheduled for completion in mid-2001 comprises:
  • Six linear berths totaling 2.16km in length, of which two berths are operational,
  • 1.2 million sq m for container handling and storage activities
  • a port administration building and government agencies complex,
  • an IT network system, already operational,
  • a 5.4km access road, now completed, linking the port to the Second Link expressway,
  • a 31.5km rail link to the national grid, and
  • 18 super post and post panamx quay cranes, 58 rubber-tyred gantry cranes and a full complement of prime movers and trailers.
