The fast-growing Port of Tanjung Pelepas plans to extend a rail link to speed deliveries into Malaysia's industrial heartland.
The railway now runs to Pasir Gudang, some 50 miles from the port in southern Johore state adjacent to Singapore. The extension will take it to the Nilai inland port and other points in Negri Sembilan state; Port Dickson near the capital, Kuala Lumpur; and other areas.
Nilai, near Kuala Lumpur and its airport, is on a branch to the main railway line to Thailand in the north and Singapore to the south. Nilai has facilities for container and other handling and consolidation, bonded warehousing and other services.
Mohamad Sidik Shaik Osman, chief executive of the port, led a road show in the first attempt to expand its services to the central region of the country. "It is a crucial step in demonstrating to our future customers that PTP's hinterland with rail availability extends throughout peninsular Malaysia," he said.
