Three more quay cranes for PTP

New Straits Times

Based on increased demand from the fourth quarter of 2000, PTP has taken delivery of an additional three quay cranes, bringing the total number to 12 quay cranes.

The quay cranes will be operational by end September. Two further quayside cranes have been scheduled for delivery in November.

The 14 quay cranes are all of the Super Post Panamax type and have an outreach of 53m with a lifting capacity of 50 tonnes.

With 14 quayside cranes operations by end 2000, handling capacity will be approximately 2.6 million TEUs per annum.

With berths five and six, the last two berths of PTP's Phase One scheduled to be operational by early 2001, PTP will by then be well equipped to handle annual volumes in excess of two million TEUs.

With shipping lines taking delivery of more Super Post Panamax vessels, PTP is currently planning on increasing the number of cranes to a 24, ensuring at least four quay cranes for every 360m of wharf.

The additional quay cranes will feature a longer outreach to handle larger vessels and twin spreaders able to lift two twenty-foot containers simultaneously.
