The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), South East Asia’s fastest growing transhipment port is set to increase its capacity further with the scheduled progress of the first two berths as part of the Phase Two works.

PTP Phase II development, which began end 2002, consists of 2 main packages, the dredging and reclamation (D&R) for an additional 8 berths of 2.88 km and the physical construction of an additional 2 berths of 720 metres.

The dredging and reclamation for 2.88 km of terminal is now nearing 75% completion. The dredging process will widen the port’s access channel from 250 metres to 420 metres and increase the draft to 16 metres from the current 15 metres.

Phase Two draft alongside will also be 19.5 metres, this ensures PTP’s readiness to cater towards the next generation of container vessels.

The first 360 metres of berth is scheduled to be completed by early 2004 and the second berth shortly after.

The two berths is a linear extension from the existing Phase 1 of PTP with a slight 5 degree curve. Plans are also underway for the port to acquire additional Super Post Panamax quayside cranes for the new berths.

The completion of the 720 metres of Phase 2 will boost PTP capacity by approximately 1 million TEUs. PTP’s current capacity is 5 million TEUs annually.

PTP is strategically located at the southwest shoulder of Johor with a minimum diversion time from the confluence of the main international shipping lanes.

PTP’s strategic location presents significant geographical advantages through its deep waters, sheltered bay and wide access channel.

PTP offers 6 berths of 360 metres each totaling 2.16 km in length backed by one of the largest container yards in the region with a storage capacity of 110,000 TEUs.

Operational equipment includes 24 Super Post Panamax quay cranes, 10 of which have a 22-box outreach and twin pick spreaders and is the largest in the region.
