Two more Sany STS cranes head for PTP

Two more STS cranes are on their way to Port of Tanjung Pelepas as the port ramps up its crane fleet to support record throughput.
 

Chinese manufacturer Sany Marine Heavy Industry has shipped two STS cranes to Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas.

The units form part of a broader order agreed in February 2024 for six ultra-large container vessel (ULCV) STS cranes, with options and follow-on commitments bringing the total to 10 cranes from Sany Marine. With six units already delivered in two shipments in August and December 2025, the latest units appear to be additional optional cranes. The already delivered STS cranes from the series have a 65t SWL, a 55.5m lifting height, and a 72m outreach.

The port has been investing heavily in new cranes and terminal infrastructure to bolster capacity and efficiency, aiming to handle increasing container volumes and meet the growing demand from major shipping alliances such as Gemini Cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. PTP handled 14,028,375 TEU in 2025, becoming the first single container terminal in Malaysia to surpass the 14m TEU mark.

The port started the year by taking delivery of eight e‑RTGs, which are the first of 58 e‑RTGs ordered from ZPMC under a 2025 agreement, with further deliveries scheduled throughout 2026. The e-RTGs are automation-ready and can be retrofitted for full automation in the future.

According to MMC Corporation Berhad, the majority shareholder and operator of PTP, the terminal deployed 11 STS and 41 new electric RTGs in 2025 and is acquiring 52 electric prime movers (terminal trucks) for delivery in 2026. The port is also progressing with the development of Berth Zero as part of its capacity growth.
