Volumes jump at PTP

Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP handled 957,500 TEU during the first quarter of 2004, an increase of 27% over the 749,231 TEU seen in the corresponding period last year.
The port saw a total of 791 vessel calls in the first three months of 2004, an annual increase of 7.7% and the highest level of first quarter calls since operations begin.
PTP claimed a new berth production record of 302 moves per hour was set during operations in February.
Maersk-Sealand’s 7,266 TEU containership Skagen Maersk (built 1999) reportedly completed 4,613 moves in less than sixteen hours.
“These latest figures have shown that PTP continues to register robust growth despite increasingly competitive market conditions,” said PTP CEO Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman.
On the Free Zone front, the past quarter saw the official launch of the cocoa products manufacturer JB Cocoa’s factory in PTP industrial free zone.
PTP said the construction of BMW’s Asian spare parts distributions centre is “progressing as scheduled” and should be completed by June 2004.
“ In line with Container Security Initiative (CSI) requirements, the container scanning facilities in PTP are also fully operational, “ PTP said.
