Work on the Phase Two development of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is on schedule with the first two berths of 360 metres each scheduled to be completed by early 2004, the port said.

In a statement on Oct 10, PTP said the Phase Two development, which began late last year, consists of two main packages - the dredging and reclamation for an additional eight berths with a total length of 2.88km, and the physical construction of an additional first two berths.

The dredging and reclamation work is now nearing 75 per cent completion. This would help widen the port's access channel from 250 metres to 420 metres and increase the draft to 16 metres from the current 15 metres.

Phase Two draft alongside would also be 19.5 metres to ensure PTP's readiness to cater for the next generation of container vessels, PTP said.

The first 360 metres berth is schedule to be completed by early 2004 and
the second berth shortly after.

The completion of the 720 metres of Phase Two would boost PTP container handling capacity by another one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to its current capacity of five million TEUs annually.

PTP said plans were also underway for the port to acquire additional Super Post Panamax quayside cranes for the new berths.
