World's Largest Container Vessel Docks At PTP

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas marked a milestone in its operations when the world’s largest container ship the MSC Oscar berthed to deliver cargo at Johor’s premier container port.
The vessel, owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) landed at the port in its maiden voyage from Yantian, China to Europe when it called at the port on Tuesday.
The MSC Oscar is the first of a series of ultra large container vessel from MSC to berth at Tanjung Pelepas which is Malaysia’s largest container terminal.
With nominal capacity of 19,224 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), MSC Oscar is eco-friendly and equipped with state of the art fuel-efficient engines for a greener supply chain, according to statement from PTP.
The US$140 million (RM502 million) vessel weighs in at 197,362 dead weight tonnage (dwt), and spans over 395.4 metres in length and 59 metres in width, with a draught of 16 metres, or the same size as four football fields.
Inaugurated early this year, the 45,300 tonne steel MSC Oscar now services the Albatross string on the new East-West trade routes between Asia and Europe.
MSC Oscar provides a link from Asia to Northern Europe, calling on ports such as Busan, Qingdao, Ningbo Shanghai, Xiamen, Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven.
PTP CEO Glen Hilton said the port was already equipped to handle mega sized vessels.
PTP services major shipping lines and box operators, providing shippers in Malaysia and abroad connectivity to the global market.
PTP is a joint venture between MMC Corporation Bhd (70%) and APM Terminals BV (30%).
APM is the port operator owned by AP Moeller-Maersk A/S (30%), a global ports group with a global port network in 69 countries.
MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company SA is a privately owned global shipping company founded in 1970 by Gianluigi Aponte.
The container shipping lines with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, operates in over 450 offices across more than 150 countries worldwide with over 24,000 employees.
MSC’s shipping line sails on more than 200 trade routes, calling at over 315 ports.
