World Top Container Ports 2012

Container Management

Tanjung Pelepas – Malaysia, TEU throughput 2011: 7,500,000 (+ 15 %)

Malaysia's Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) handled 7.5m teu in 2012, representing a 15% increase compared with 2011 and maintaining its 17th position in the world port rankings. Growth was driven by additional business from existing customers as well as volumes from new lines.

Container volumes from PTP's two largest clients, Maersk Line and Evergreen, increased by 16% over the previous year, while PTP added various other lines during the year, including Hanjin and STX Pan Ocean of Korea, Mitsui and " K " Line of Japan and China Shipping.

From just two shipping lines in its early days, PTP now serves 26 lines and is Malaysia's largest container terminal. It is one of only seven ports worldwide chosen by Maersk Line for its new "Daily Maersk "service, which runs between Asia and northern Europe.

This year PTP says that it expects to continue to outperform global volume growth and to finish the year with about 8m teu in throughputs.

A key focus for the port in 2012 is to strengthen its share of the local cargo sector. Local import / export volumes for the first quarter were reported to be 30% higher than in the same period last year.

PTP is a 70/30 joint venture between Malaysia utilities and infrastructure group MMC Corp and AP Moller- Maersk's APM Terminals and currently has a handling capacity of around 8.5m teu. It aims to increase this to 10.5m teu by developing Berths 13- 14 by the end of 2012. Supporting equipment for the two new berths will include eight new quay cranes and 31 electrified RTGs. Berths 13 and 14 and their supporting port operating equipment will be designed to handle the latest generation of the largest container vessels.
