The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Malaysia’s biggest single port operator and a subsidiary owned by MMC Corp Bhd, organised a three day educational visit from Nov 22-24 for 40 selected students from four secondary schools (SMK) in Gelang Patah.

The trip to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) comprised of students from SMK Gelang Patah, SMK Tanjung Adang, SMK Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar and SMK Taman Nusa Jaya.

The programme provided an opportunity to the students to explore and get a glimpse of what tertiary education has to offer while motivating and encouraging them to strive harder in all their future endeavours.

As part of the three-day programme and their stay at UKM, the students were taken to the science and technology, law, economic and administration faculties.

They were also introduced to motivational and recreational activities conducted by student association Persatuan Mahasiswa Anak Johor (PERMAJ).

In addition, they also visited a number of interesting places in Kuala Lumpur, including the KLCC Tower, National Islamic Museum and KL Bird & Butterfly Park.

PTP CEO Glen Hilton said some 300 students have benefitted from the educational trips to local universities which have been going on for four consecutive years.

Among the local universities visited previously were Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, University Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Mara, International Islamic University Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia.

“At PTP, our responsibility is not only to its employees, customers and investors, but also to the various communities in which it operates in. This educational trip is one of the company’s initiatives to nurture their (the students’) knowledge and interest so they can plan wisely for their future wellbeing,” he said.

Siti Aishah Zakaria from SMK Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar, one of the students who joined the trip, said that it was an eye opening experience.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to be part of the trip this year. It certainly helps us as we embark beyond secondary school life and learn about education at the tertiary level,” she said.

Apart from the educational trip, PTP has actively organised various education-based programmes to deliver the needed support for Gelang Patah students in their studies.

Other programmes by PTP for both secondary and primary schools include motivational talks, English communication workshops, port tours, English tuition and back to school programmes, especially for those sitting for their UPSR (Primary School Achievement Test) and SPM (Malaysian Certificate of Education) examinations.
