Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP) has yet again drawn attention to its English Development Programme as part of its continuous effort in giving back to the local community and helping the younger generation.

The year-long programme aims to bridge the urban-rural gap in English language proficiency while enhancing the students’ understanding of the language.

The programme is focussed at boosting students’ confidence in using the universal language in their daily life as well as to enhance their public speaking and communication skills.

PTP interim CEO Steven Yoogalingam said PTP will continue to provide platforms to help local students to improve proficiency in English and alleviate the standard of education for the younger generation, within the Gelang Patah community.

"Apart from that, we want to boost their confidence levels, provide invaluable tips that will improve the students’ proficiency in English," he added.

Steven said PTP had recognised the deteriorating standard of English language proficiency among the younger generation and was fully committed to tackle the issue.

With the help of Johor Baru Education Department, PTP had initiated and established its English Development Programme in 2013, with an eye to equip students with learning techniques and to improve the students’ performance in examinations.

This year, about 80 students from four secondary schools within Gelang Patah district had participated in the programme which comprised tutorial classes, communications workshops and English language intensive camp.

Abid Zikri Rosli from SMK Taman Nusa Jaya, one of the students, said the exposure has helped him to do better in exams.

"Through this programme, I’m getting the right information to score higher during exams. The programme also helps me to improve my English communication skills," he said.

The tutorial classes are handled by an experienced team of teachers appointed by Johor Baru District Education Office and tutors selected by PTP personnel.

Tutor Mohd Azham Abd Rahman said he is proud to be one of the selected PTP tutors in this year’s programme.

"Being a local lad, my participation enables me to engage with the future generation of my community via fun, interactive and active participation from both the tutors and students," he said.

At the same time, PTP has earmarked a number of programmes as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. They include motivational camps, educational trips to local universities, distribution of schooling aid, soccer and cricket leagues and environment-based CSR activities such as replanting of seagrass meadow, beach cleaning and mangrove replanting.

PTP is a joint venture between utilities and infrastructure group MMC Corp Bhd and global ports group, APM Terminals.
