Tanjung Pelepas receives four more quay cranes

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has welcomed the arrival of four new ship-to-shore (STS) quay cranes as it looks to optimise services and capacity, catering to the largest vessels in the world.

Purchasing these super post-Panamax cranes forms part of the Malaysian hub’s asset management strategy to improve terminal efficiency by increasing container handling capacity, capability and reliability, whilst meeting its safety standards.

The cranes have a lifting capacity of 65 tonnes, are 55.5 m high, weigh 1,900 tonnes and are capable of handling containers over 24-rows across ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs).

PTP chairman Dato’ Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh pointed out that the operator’s series of equipment purchase would help the port to receive ULCVs.

He stated: “By investing in our state-of-the-art equipment, we are further establishing our terminal as one of the best equipped and most technologically advanced terminals in the region and will ensure that PTP can keep up with the rapid changes in the port and shipping industry and subsequently meet the growing demand of our customers.”

The four units form part of a purchase agreement, signed with ZPMC in April last year, for the supply of eight ULCV STS quay cranes to PTP, which is a joint venture between MMC Corporation Berhad (70%) and APM Terminals (30%).

The remaining machines are expected to be delivered in Q3 2020 to bring the total of STS cranes in operation at PTP to 66, of which 24 are Triple-E compliant.

According to the port, the delivery clearly demonstrates the class of equipment and technological advancement at the port, underlining “its aspiration to meet market demand and thereby become the preferred port of choice in the region”.
